Curriculum Statement

Together with our colleagues at Evolution Trust the Federation of Angel Road Schools are striving to design an effective and aspirational curriculum based on 6 guiding principles:

Intent

We believe that a curriculum should to be broad, balanced and academically rigorous. This is so we build on the innate curiosity in children and so they become responsible, healthy and successful learners. We want them to:

• achieve exceptional outcomes at each stage their educational journey. 
• contribute to and learn in a thriving inclusive community
• value and learn from their locality and the wider world.

We value the impact that independence, creativity and curiosity can have on outcomes so our curriculum is designed to develop this in our learners.

We aim to deliver the National Curriculum because it

‘provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said, and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement’. (National Curriculum in England 2014).

The school curriculum goes beyond the national curriculum and is all that is learned through lessons, routines, traditions, celebrations, relationships, visits and experiences.

Implementation

We support learners to thrive as individuals by working in partnership with families to overcome barriers whatever they may be.  The curriculum reflects our particular context and we continue to review it to ensure we meet the ever changing needs of our diverse community.

We are focused on developing the literacy and numeracy skills needed to move forward confidently to the next stage of their learning. We are developing far greater rigour in improving phonics and early reading so children have the skills to access the whole curriculum as they move through the school. We intend children to develop deep understanding rather than simply memorising facts. So our curriculum is being planned cohesively to connect new knowledge and vocabulary to existing schema. 

We recognise the importance of reading, fluency and oracy as a means to accessing a broad and balanced curriculum. We prioritise children’s learning to read so they can read to learn. We recognise the importance this has on their educational future and therefore the renewed focus across all curriculum areas. 

English, Maths and Personal Development are taught discretely. Other subjects are currently taught thematically whilst ensuring the subject substance and discipline is adhered to. This enables teachers to revisit ideas and concepts and creates the opportunity to form coherent meaningful links, as they naturally occur. When possible, teaching is enhanced by trips, visitors and practical activities.

Alongside this we have a strong emphasis on personal and social development so that we raise aspirations and self-efficacy. PSHE, therefore, has a central place in our curriculum as we want pupils to be able to be challenged, to lead safe and healthy lives in modern Britain and become responsible individuals who can contribute positively to their community and environment. Our community is diverse and so our curriculum encourages pupils to value difference and develop a sense of belonging, understanding and acceptance. Strong communication skills and a wide vocabulary will enable our children to cooperate with others, learn well, relate effectivelywith their peers and treat people with respect.

Our personal development curriculum helps them to develop a growth mindset and resilience so they can learn well, accept mistakes and move forward.

Impact

We aim to ensure children enjoy and rise to challenging learning, progressing very well academically, socially, physically, and emotionally, so they are very well prepared for life. They will know what success looks like them for them and others and celebrate this success. By the time they end their primary education they will have experienced success in a rich and meaningful way. Our curriculum is under review. This is quite rightly a complex process and we want to get it right adhering to the 6 principles. We are engaging with local, national and internationally renowned experts and subject associations to inform and curate and inspiring curriculum. We want the curriculum developments to be aspirational so we are cultivating a level of challenge around the academic content whilst building on children’s lived experiences by enhancing and providing opportunities for children beyond their experiences.
